Octopus embraces Apps for Good

20 Jun 2017

Sponsorship for childrens tech entrepreneurship program

Some of the most creative and responsive technology-based ideas come from the youngest consumers. That’s why Octopus is proud to be a sponsor of Apps for Good, a charity that helps budding young entrepreneurs create tech products that tackle problems or issues they care about.

On 20th June, finalists taking part in the nationwide Apps for Good competition will meet for its annual presentation ceremony. And Labs’ own Tcha Wilson will be among the judges.

“I’m excited to be a part of it,” said Tcha, who sees his role more as a defender of good ideas than as a “dragon.”

The finalists were selected from the 25,000 students that attend Apps for Good courses in App Development and the Internet of Things. Past award-winning entries address a number of issues – including helping people share unwanted household goods with charities; dividing housework between families and housemates; answering questions about puberty; learning the periodic table through gamification; and providing information and support for young lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.

Apps for Good courses teach not only the fundamentals of coding, but also skills such as problem solving, creativity, communication, and entrepreneurship. “Young people are users of technology and we’re helping them to become makers and creators,” explained Heather Picov, Managing Director at Apps for Good.
