Job Description

About the Role

As a Data Analyst at Octopus Ventures, your primary focus will be to develop and maintain end-to-end analytics from requirements gathering with key stakeholders, building quality data pipeline, dashboarding the results via BI tools and providing impactful interpretation to those that would most benefit. You'll work with stakeholders across all parts of Octopus Ventures.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Working collaboratively with the wider team to gather requirements from stakeholders of all levels, including prioritising, tracking and reporting on their delivery status regularly.
  • Gain an excellent understanding of our data, to enable you to clearly explain the purpose, cadence and business relevance that it provides.
  • Be deeply involved in defining key metrics and KPIs against which we can report to help the team understand and drive success towards our goals.
  • Leading and contributing to the production of regular MI reports presented via BI tools, such as FuM, cashflows and FX, while supporting the validation of our underlying investment, portfolio, asset and valuation data (in accordance with FCA regulation).
  • Suggesting APIs to encourage more reliable and flexible connectivity between systems and reporting via BI tools, while minimising the duplication of data sources.
  • Being proactive and quick to react to ensure that data availability remains uninterrupted and that we consistently meet our reporting deadlines.
  • Apply analytical thinking to data-related processes, with a view to constantly striving for efficiencies and improvements, while reducing the need for manual workarounds.
  • Working with colleagues and third parties to provide ideas and support the delivery of projects which are crucial to our future success, as needed, whether that’s new system launches and integrations, retail fundraising offer launches or institutional fund closes.
  • Supporting the team to identify the best tools for efficient, accurate and customer friendly end-to-end analytics, from data collection through to the business using trends to inform strategy.

Qualifications

  • Good understanding of equity investments generally, although you don’t need to have worked exactly in our part of the industry before - we welcome transferable skill sets and recognise that diverse working backgrounds make us stronger overall.
  • Work effectively with non-technical people, both internal and external, so that stakeholders can easily interpret and trust our data and reporting.
  • An excellent sense of how to prioritise and manage your own workload.
  • Be freethinking and proactive in suggesting and seeing through changes to ensure processes remain efficient, scalable and have minimal time wastage.
  • Strong problem-solving ability and analytical mindset – you proactively gather the right data from appropriate sources, probe all the facts and consider other perspectives.
  • A comfort working with large databases and numbers, including complex financial models to assess fund and asset level performance.
  • Excellent experience of Excel at an intermediate or above
  • Experience working with Power BI (Pro or, ideally, Premium) – data modelling, report creation and distribution
  • Comfortable writing SQL and DAX
  • A passion for technology and the courage to proactively challenge the status quo when building data solutions.
  • Great attention to detail, and a tenacity for problem solving through to resolutions.
  • A passion for putting the customer (internal and external) at the heart of what you do.
