About the Role

What’s in it for you?

The second line provides the policies, frameworks, tools, techniques and support to enable risk and compliance to be managed in the first line, conducts monitoring to judge how effectively they are doing it, and helps ensure consistency of definitions and measurement of risk. You will play a key part in decision making processes, as well as being able to drive change and implement new ideas. 

Within the first line, a significant part of this role will involve working with Octopus Labs, the tech division of Octopus. Labs use the latest technology to build state of the art systems to support our business processes and you will have the opportunity to gain a practical understanding of how these tools work. 

You will be someone with amazing interpersonal skills who can build many relationships at all levels across the business.  You will be able to quickly distinguish between issues that need your time and investment, and those that do not.  This is a role which will involve a different range of skills from rolling up your sleeves to get stuck in, to senior level interactions. This role will offer huge scope for learning and developing within risk and information security, including the opportunity to gain qualifications in this field. 

The Team: 

We’re looking for a second line Risk Manager to work within Octopus Investments reporting to the Head of Risk.  You will be working in the wider Risk & Compliance team with over 35 people.  

The Risk team is the second line of defence within Octopus.  We have a goal to protect the business by embedding an honest open risk culture, doing the right thing, and supporting Octopus’ core values: Be straightforward; be bold; and be helpful.  We are keen to add value to the business and propose solutions beyond the basic expectations of risk.  We also like to work quickly when identifying a risk, fixing it now and for the longer term with the appropriate controls.  Our risk model includes over 50 Risk Coordinators in the first line who help manage the risks. 

What will you be doing? 

  • As a risk manager you will drive, manage, and develop certain areas within the risk function for Octopus. This includes a focus on Octopus Labs and Information Security for which you will review and improve processes and policies, facilitate and run the Information Security Committee and prepare reporting for review at a board level and by other committees. 

  • You will utilise your strong interpersonal skills to challenge the first line in a friendly and supportive way, taking ownership of resolving issues and continuing to foster a culture of transparency and “no blame” on risk incidents. 

  • Within this role you will also be involved in a wide range of adhoc and reoccurring tasks that could include improving the maturity of risk frameworks, providing support and insight on data protection initiatives, monitoring certain aspects relating to business continuity, crisis management and operational resilience across the firm and assisting in managing the insurance coverage for Octopus.  

Qualifications

Ideally, you’ll have: 

✅ A firm understanding of approaches to Information Security, with a passion and keenness to learn more about the latest developments in this space. 

✅ A background in risk roles and a familiarity with risk management frameworks, including an awareness of Information Security frameworks such as the NIST framework. 

✅ A good working knowledge of Business Continuity and Operational Resilience. 

✅ Be humble, engaging and friendly when interacting with everyone in the business.  We all make mistakes, but how you deal with them defines you. 

✅ A track record of bringing and implementing new ideas in teams you have worked in, with the ability to think strategically and understand the commercial value and business context of work.
