Senior Project Manager

London, UK

Company Description

Octopus is a group of companies which invests in the people, ideas and industries that will help to change the world.

We believe that the companies serving two of our most important needs – our financial wellbeing and our planet’s future – are failing. And we want that to change. We want everything we do, whether that’s in financial services or energy supply, to have a positive impact on the people it touches.

In our financial services business, we care as much about the impact our investments have, as we do about the returns that we generate for our investors. We manage more than £9.1 billion* on behalf of retail and institutional investors, specialising in renewable energy, real estate, smaller company and venture capital investing.

Our energy supply business - Octopus Energy, is one of the fastest growing companies in the UK. It has grown from start-up to more than 1.7 million customers over the last four years and is now the #1 rated UK energy supply business, and the only one to be recommended by Which? three years in a row.

Octopus Energy, Octopus Giving, Octopus Investments, Octopus Renewables, Octopus Real Estate, Octopus Ventures, Seccl Technology and Octopus Wealth are all part of Octopus Group. Visit

Job Description

About the Role

The Brand:

The Senior Project Manager role sits within the Change Team reporting into the Head of Project Management.

The Change function sits across the business supporting all projects. The team requires an excellent and experienced candidate who can both roll up their sleeves to get involved with the detail and leverage their expertise to help continue driving us to 'better and better.'

In a team of project managers, it is anticipated that this role will be acting as one of the most senior PMs, will have opportunity to influence and coach others in the team, and will involve working collaboratively with the Business Analyst team.

About the role:

  • The role requires the successful candidate to demonstrate pragmatic, hands-on project management abilities, applying rigor to the delivery process while being able to respond to a rapidly changing environment. Perhaps most crucially, the candidate must have the drive and ability to constantly improve the way we understand and run projects and act as an advocate for the delivery function across the company - and hence be an integral part to the future success of Octopus.
  • This role will require the individual to perform project reviews, and then be able to analyse the results so that the most important areas are clearly identified, reported upon, and the required actions are completed in a timely manner.
  • The successful candidate must have the ability to take a risk-based approach to project management – using experience to prioritise areas that are most important while compromising where appropriate. In addition to having excellent project and organisational discipline the individual must be able to take a hands-on approach with little or no project support or admin available

  • Navigate, manage and communicate with a wide range of stakeholders including senior management.
  • Manage multiple in-flight projects and prioritise between them effectively.
  • Plan for, budget, and manage multiple projects at once that span multiple functions in a complex and fast-changing environment. Where a programme of works is required, being able to identify this and manage it accordingly will be essential.
  • Deliver complex projects that could include strategic, regulatory, and technical managing concurrent budgets of up to £1 million
  • Provide structured communication to enable timely decision making.

Ideally, you’ll have some or all of the following qualifications, skills and job-related experience

  • Financial Services experience

  • Have a solid grasp of basic and many advanced project management principles, along with having experience in successfully applying and advancing those principles.

  • Excellent communication skills, approachable and good at forming relationships with people of all levels within the business.

  • Ability to use own initiative and work with minimal supervision not only to achieve delegate tasks, but to seek out and deliver what needs to be done.

  • Ability to prioritise own workload within a busy environment and meet deadlines.

  • Excellent written and presentational skills.

  • Excellent project and organisational discipline.

  • Proven self-working and motivational skills.

  • Strong analytical skills.

  • PRINCE 2 and/or Agile training qualification.

And to really stand out from the crowd, you will display the following qualities and characteristics:

  • Champion the promotion of integrity in all endeavours

  • Mentor those around them in aspects of the profession such as leadership, methodology, tools, people skills and navigating politics

  • Excellent communication skills, approachable and good at forming relationships with people of all levels within the business.

  • Ability to use own initiative and work with minimal supervision not only to achieve delegate tasks, but to seek out and deliver what needs to be done.

  • Proven self-working and motivational skills.

  • Broad understanding of financial markets, regulation and industry trends.
