Job Description

About the Role

What’s in it for you?

The size of our business gives you lots of opportunities to develop your skillset within risk management – we are small enough to offer you variety across multiple areas of risk management, but also big enough for you to work on exciting projects and tasks.

Due to the innovative nature of Octopus, in this role you will have the opportunity to work with a variety of stakeholders in driving change and pushing forward new ideas and approaches within risk management, continuing to foster a culture of transparency and “no blame” on risk incidents.

The team:

Sitting within the wider Risk & Compliance function, the Risk team is the second line of defence within Octopus.  We have a goal to protect the business by embedding an honest open risk culture, doing the right thing, and supporting Octopus’ core values: Be straightforward; be bold; and be helpful.  We are keen to add value to the business and propose solutions beyond the basic expectations of risk.  We also like to work quickly when identifying a risk, fixing it now and for the longer term with the appropriate controls.

Our risk model includes over 50 risk coordinators in the first line who help manage the risks. The second line provides the policies, frameworks, tools, techniques and support to enable risk and compliance to be managed in the first line, conducts monitoring to judge how effectively they are doing it and helps ensure consistency of definitions and measurement of risk.

What will you be doing?

  • Leading, driving, managing and developing certain areas within the risk function for Octopus. This includes IFPR disclosures, regulatory reporting and the ICARA process.

  • Challenging the first line in a friendly and supportive way and where incidents have occurred taking a hands-on approach in facilitating incident root cause analysis.

  • Preparing reporting for review at a board level and by other committees.

  • Communicating with and building relationships with stakeholders of all levels from across the business, distinguishing between issues that need your time and investment, and those that do not.

Qualifications

Ideally, you’ll have:

✅ A strong understanding of risk management frameworks, gained from various risk roles.

✅ IFPR knowledge, including scenario analysis and stress testing experience.

✅ Ability to challenge the first line and the wider business in a humble, engaging and light-mannered way where mistakes are dealt with using a solutions focused approach.

✅ A good awareness of approaches to Info Sec and Operational Resilience.

✅ The experience to think strategically and understand the commercial value of your work, as well as what is going on in the wider market/industry.

We encourage you to apply even if you don’t tick every box. What’s the worst that can happen?

This role will evolve as we grow and develop. So, if you are looking for a challenge in a fast paced and dynamic business, we can deliver on that.

Additional Information

This role is being offered as a 13-month maternity cover to start in November 2023.

We are open to alternative working arrangements such as 4 days per week (part-time) for this position.

Our Values

We’re committed to creating a diverse and inclusive employee experience for all. We promote equal opportunities for growth and development regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, age, disability, or socio-economic background. We believe strongly that teams are at their best when every member of the team feels safe to bring their whole self to work.
